Umaga and Williams team up for BGC APBs, and bring in Holah To Play At Tens
Former All Blacks Filo Tiatia and Tana Umaga team up with Springbok icon Chester Williams to mentor the BGC APBs All-Stars at the 2013 GFI HKFC Tens, while the exceptional New Zealand flanker Marty Holah adds his 36 All Black test caps to a powerful forward ensemble.
Legendary Waikato tearaway Marty Holah is a decisive selection for the defending champions of the world’s premier Tens tournament; due to kick off in Hong Kong. His relentless work rate and skills at the breakdown will make a formidable pack even more threatening.
The BGC APBs All-Stars have named another star-studded line up in the build up to one of the glamour events of the Hong Kong Sevens Week, clearly signalling to all their intention of lifting the cup twice in two years. Japan Rugby hero Takuro Miuchi returns to Hong Kong along with Todd Clever the current Captain of the USA Eagles, Ikale Tahi hard-man Hale T-Pole and the heavy hitting Tone Kopelani will add real starch to the forwards ably supported by the three time Captain of Oxford University John Carter and Japanese Sevens representative Siupeli Lokotui.
“It’s a wonderful selection up front. The addition of Marty Holah will be felt at the breakdown where he is a master of the craft. The forward group is mobile, superbly skilled and we at BGC are delighted once again to have the participation of players with such pedigree. The calibre of players this year shows us our sponsorship is put to fantastic use” says Len Harvey, BGC’s Executive Managing Director and General Manager, Asia-Pacific.
Some spectators will wonder which way to look when the 2012 Champions of the GFI HKFC Tens take the pitch during Sevens Week in Hong Kong. Not only is there an eye-wateringly good playing squad, but also a confidence boosting group to guide the side through the world’s finest Tens tournament. Records and statistics barely begin to describe the careers of Chester Williams, Tana Umaga and Filo Tiatia, but their participation in the tournament is a massive acknowledgement of the importance in growing the game in Asia.
“The game needs every impetus to grow in this region and I am keenly aware that my presence, along with Tana and Filo will help the momentum” says Springbok great Chester Williams.
Williams continues, “I’m really looking forward to conducting the APB Easter Rugby Academy, as it’s important that the youth are inspired to enjoy their Rugby by learning to improve their skills”. The BGC APBs Academy is open for children from all age groups and clubs, and is from 25-27 March at the Hong Kong Football Club.
